1855 2 - 3 Bergamot

Fairly good weather for football had drawn a crowd of 1457 to Grains Moss. was the appointed referee with assistance provided by Göran Börjesson and Eduard 'Matador' Puigcercós. 1855 decided to use a 2-5-3 set up. The following players had been chosen: Watson - Marquis, Johnson - Atwell, Shafiq, Ericson, Chaner, Wan - Piper, Otis, Norrison.

Bergamot had chosen a strategic 4-5-1 formation. Lineup: Azzi - Inversi, Cioncolini, Stancarone, Polizzi - Salici, Mola, Carbonaro, Cerdelli, Scanferla - Galeazzo.

The strategy for 1855 was to use their weak ability to press. Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Bergamot on this day, taking advantage of their outstanding level with that tactic. Bergamot mounted an inspired counterattack down the right wing after 4 minutes, but Basilio Polizzi was unable to convert from short range. 5 minutes into the game, Bergamot seemed to suffer a certain amount of confusion and they fell to a weak level of organisation. The home side put themselves ahead 1 - 0 after 14 minutes courtesy of a breakthrough from Herbert Wan, who scored with a stunning volley following a cross from the right wing. With 27 minutes gone, Giovanbattista Cerdelli suddenly found himself completely free on the right wing when a counterattack by Bergamot caught their opponents by surprise. Only a great save by the opposing keeper prevented him from scoring. Bergamot's right side looked dangerous 33 minutes in, but Magnus Watson made a good save on Giancarlo Carbonaro's hard shot to the top corner. Halftime score was 1 - 0. Possession in this half belonged to 1855, who controlled the ball 63 percent of the time.

During the break, Bergamot's coach went through the team's tactics yet again, getting them up to solid organisation. Bergamot needed a fresh pair of legs on the field, and after 55 minutes Libero Azzi made way for Carlo Finozzi. Although the whole team were struggling to impress, Bergamot's Adolfo Galeazzo was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 60 minutes. Guglielmo Scuffi was given a chance to change things around. As Adolfo Galeazzo left the field, the coach signaled to Guglielmo Scuffi to be the new set pieces taker. Stuart Piper could have put 1855 up one more, but he fired into the side netting after breaking free on the left after 64 minutes. With 70 minutes played, the Bergamot coach decided a substitution may help turn the game around. Enrico Mauro Felici Ridolfi came on, Fabio Mola had to leave the fray. After 72 minutes, Bergamot sent a free kick in high over the penalty box. In what looked like a well-rehearsed move, the ball was headed backwards and reached Giovanbattista Cerdelli, who had plenty of space to place a well aimed shot - 1 - 1. The visitors' central defence should have had no trouble clearing the pass to Alan Norrison, but the 1855 player managed to shrug them off and fired a low shot past the keeper to give his team the lead. 2 - 1! Alan Norrison should probably have put his team up another goal after 82 minutes after breaking through the middle, but some great goalkeeping by Carlo Finozzi kept the visitors in the game. Guglielmo Scuffi finished off the counterattack of Bergamot from the left rather easily, making the score 2 - 2. The visiting Demetrio Cioncolini was booed thoroughly by the home crowd 87 minutes into the game, after he broke through the middle and scored, resulting in the visitors taking the lead. 2 - 3 was the score. 1855 enjoyed most of the ball, as they maintained 57 percent of possession.

1855's top performer was clearly Stuart Piper. Lee Atwell was a disappointment, however. Most important Bergamot player was Stefano Stancarone. Demetrio Cioncolini turned in a dismal performance, however. The match ends 2 - 3.
