Rochdale 4 - 0 M-M

31494 spectators had found their way to Springfield Park, despite the heavy rain. Pedro Moreira was the appointed referee with assistance provided by and Hieronim Czachowski. A 3-5-2 alignment was the formation of choice for Rochdale. The following players had been chosen: Colbourne - Yates, Porter, Saar - Persico, Birch, Agrawal, Sumerel, Szachta - Clarkson, Wotsch.

M-M started off with a 4-4-2 lineup. Lineup: Tillen - Bonanno, Mac Domhnaill, Cachia Caruana, Alexandersson - Sarstedt, Armstrong, Persson, Yeoh - Caldwell, Thymar.

The wings were the focus of most of Rochdale's attacks on this day, taking advantage of their supernatural level with that tactic. M-M clearly preferred using their brilliant ability to attack in the middle. Making his way up the middle 20 minutes into the match, Andres Saar almost managed to squeeze a goal past the visitors' keeper, but the alert Malcolm Tillen blocked it to keep the score level. After 22 minutes, Nitin Agrawal came in from the right, feinted, then sped past the off-balance defender to make the score 1 - 0, giving Rochdale the lead. After 23 minutes a very unfortunate collision in the penalty area led to Rochdale's Dean 'The Guv'nor' Yates being carried off the pitch and replaced by Davy Castle. Scott Porter had a hard time on the waterlogged pitch - his trademark technique was nowhere in sight today. With 37 minutes played, Rochdale put themselves up 2 - 0 when the visiting defenders lost the ball to David Birch, who came up from the left and proceeded to coolly round the keeper and knock the ball home. The home side's Connor Clarkson came close to extending the lead 41 minutes into the game. His shot came in from the right hand side but Malcolm Tillen managed to save it with an unbelievable reaction stop. After 42 minutes, the away team failed to deal with a good exchange of passes on the right, and Damiano Persico gave the Rochdale supporters even more to cheer about when he increased the lead to 3 - 0. 3 - 0 was the score after the first half. Possession in this half belonged to Rochdale, who controlled the ball 55 percent of the time.

Coming from the right, Connor Clarkson almost managed to score another goal for Rochdale, but his header was tipped over the bar by the visitors' keeper. Things were deteriorating for the away team as Rochdale scored another to make it 4 - 0 after a left side attack resulted in a goal for Damiano Persico after 65 minutes. Malcolm Thymar had a couple of good opportunities to reply after getting through the middle of the opposition defence, but the home team's keeper Charles 'Charlie Boy' Colbourne was simply unbeatable. After 70 minutes, there was a bit of a mixup on the field as M-M found themselves out of position and their organisation level dropped to inadequate. With 72 minutes played, Teodor Wotsch could have brought this one home for Rochdale as he charged up on the left, but his hooked ball went just a bit too high. Rochdale were determined to attack on the wing and their central attempts were constantly abandoned in favour of the wings. The referee showed Rochdale's Scott Porter the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. Possession in the forty-five minutes was dominated by Rochdale, with 58 percent of the ball.

Rochdale's top performer was clearly Teodor Wotsch. Karol Szachta was a disappointment, however. Most important M-M player was Malcolm Caldwell. Malcolm Cachia Caruana on the other hand, had a terrible day. The match ends 4 - 0.
