3819 punters turned up at Springfield Park, and despite threatening clouds on the horizon, no rain came. David Ranito was the appointed referee with assistance provided by and Arno Fuchs. Rochdale tactics involved an interesting 4-5-1 combination. Starters: Colbourne - Yates, Sumerel, Porter, Saar - Marks, Castle, Knights, Ward, Fountain - Palmelão.

Rünenberg decided to use a 3-4-3 set up. The following players had been chosen: Noftziger - Letellier, Läuchli, Lanz - Keel, Krecker, Ginesu, Straub - Taillefer, Ruby, Dübendorfer.

Using their counter-attacking abilities was the strategy of choice for Rochdale on this day, taking advantage of their magnificent level with that tactic. 16 minutes into the match, Rünenberg's Joël Taillefer demonstrated his famed speed as he raced past his marker and passed the ball to Dave Ruby who chipped it in for 0 - 1. With 17 minutes played, after a good run down the left, Ray Fountain went down looking for a penalty after a challenge from the visitors' right fullback, but the referee waved play on, and later warned him for diving. The head of Dean 'The Guv'nor' Yates connected with a corner kick after 24 minutes, and the ball ended up with Ray Fountain of Rochdale who blasted the ball into the net, making the score 1 - 1. 27 minutes into the game, Joël Taillefer had to leave the pitch due to a knee injury. In came Malte Wehrda. The referee showed Rünenberg's Romain Krecker the yellow card after a particularly nasty challenge. A foul after 38 minutes resulted in a free kick. Andres Saar cannonballed it, giving the home team the lead 2 - 1. 2 - 1 was the halftime score. Rochdale had most of the ball, with 55 percent of possession.

An equalising goal seemed certain after 52 minutes when Erwin Lanz attacked down the left wing, but Charles 'Charlie Boy' Colbourne just managed to make a save to keep the ball out of the net. The visiting team's Dave Ruby was able to score the 2 - 2 equaliser with a header 53 minutes into the match, after some good work on the right. 56 minutes in, the referee awarded Rochdale a penalty. Andres Saar coolly slotted it home for a 3 - 2 lead. Although the whole team were struggling to impress, Rünenberg's Gaudenz Straub was singled out as being the problem as he was called off the pitch after 87 minutes. Noah Forrer was given a chance to change things around. Possession in this half belonged to Rochdale, who controlled the ball 55 percent of the time.

Most important Rochdale player was Charles 'Charlie Boy' Colbourne. Ray Fountain on the other hand, had a terrible day. Bruno Ginesu performed admirably for Rünenberg. Noah Forrer was a disappointment, however. The match ends 3 - 2.
